The Acropolis of
Lindos
Commanding, on top of the steep
rock, at height of 115 m. above
sea level, the ancient Αcropolis
frames the Aegean. Επιβλητική

The rock and Αcropolis have always
been a dominant location on the Lindian
landscape and a centre of worship.
The few and sparse artifacts indicate
signs of life here from the Neolithic
Era and the Bronze Age (4th and 3rd
millennium BC). The first configuration
of the space took place under the tyrant
Cleobulus (mid-6th century BC), when
the first stone temple was built on the
highest point of the Αcropolis, probably
surrounded by a defensive wall. The
fortress-like character of the Αcropolis
was preserved in the Byzantine, Medieval
and Ottoman periods. The Knights of
the Order of St. John took over the castle
in October 1307. The construction of the
knights’ fortification began in the 14th
century and was completed in the 15th,
during the era of the Grand Masters
of the Order, Antoine Fluvian and
Pierre D’Aubusson. On 30 September
1522, the Lindos garrison surrendered
the keys to the Ottomans, and a small
